AVE MARIA/FGCU RECAP

Fort Myers, FL- FGCU (2-1) dominated Ave Maria University, Sunday night from Alico Arena, defeating the Gyrenes, 105-61.

Stats (AMU):

Ave Maria shot 35.0% (21/60) from the field, 32.1% (9/28) from beyond the arc, and were outrebounded 51-31 by FGCU. The Gyrenes dished out 8 assists, had 6 steals, and 1 block in the game. Ave Maria forced 10 FGCU team turnovers, while having 19 team turnovers of their own.

FGCU shot 50.6% (40/79) from the field, 42.5% (17/40) from beyond the arc, and outrebounded Ave Maria 51-31. The Eagles dished out 21 assists, had 13 steals, and 5 blocks in the game. FGCU forced 19 Ave Maria team turnovers, while having 10 team turnovers of their own.

Overview:

FGCU took control from tip off in this game, and it was a complete domination of the Gyrenes, by the Eagles. Zach Anderson scored a game high 22 points, and Isaiah Thompson finished with 21 points. Ave Maria was led offensively by Jonathan Effertz, who scored 13 points. The Eagles were able to empty the bench, and 14 players received minutes in tonight’s game. The Eagles shot 42% from beyond the arc, hitting 17 3 point field goals, and that was key to the big win. Head Coach Pat Chambers was able to employ many different rotations at guard and in the post, and in a game the Eagles never trailed, the team will be fully healthy, as they look for the big upset Wednesday night in Knoxville.

FGCU (2-1) faces #11 Tennessee (1-1), Wednesday night at 7 PM, from Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville.
