EaglesNestCast ASUN WBB Preseason Awards

Preseason Player of the Year

6’1 JR G Kierstan Bell, FGCU

Kierstan had the best season in FGCU’s history last season averaging 24.3 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.9 spg, and 2.3 bpg. Her accolades included ASUN Player of the Year, ASUN Newcomer of the Year, ASUN Tournament MVP, and ASUN All-Tournament Team.

She also was named WBCA Honorable Mention All American, and AP Honorable Mention All-American. Look for her and TK Morehouse to combine to be a part of the most electric and deepest backcourt in the ASUN and NCAA.

Defensive Player of the Year

6’5 SR F Jazz Bond, UNF

Jazz won the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year last season, and currently is UNF’s Career Leader in blocks, and also earned ASUN All-Conference 1st Team honors while averaging 17.8 ppg and 8.2 rpg for the Ospreys.

She is a complete two way player, and even set the school record in points last season scoring 35 points vs UNA. Expect more of the same from Jazz and UNF to be a tough out as they also added Jaida Bond, Jazz’s sister, who transferred from UNA, after having another big year for the Lions.

Newcomer of the Year

5’7 GR G Kendall Spray, FGCU

Kendall joins the Eagles after two years at Clemson, where she gained accolades for most 3 pointers (80) made in a season as a Junior, and finished 38th in 3 point field goals made, 16th in 3 point field goals attempted, and 20th in 3 point field goals made as a Senior. The deepest backcourt in the ASUN gains another threat from beyond the arc, so look for the Eagles to look to her often if Kierstan and TK aren’t driving to the basket.

Coach of the Year

Karl Smesko, FGCU

Head Coach Karl Smesko will be the ASUN Coach of the Year until another program reaches the success the Eagles have had in his tenure.

It’s incredible how every year he transforms this team into perennial ASUN league winners no matter who is on the roster. The rich got richer as the Eagles added Kaela Webb (Detroit Mercy, 17.7 ppg), Kendall Spray (Clemson, 10.3 ppg), and Karli Seay (LSU, 4.9 ppg) to an electric backcourt. Look for another 30+ win season as the Eagles look to win the ASUN, and also make a run in the NCAA Tournament.
