BELLARMINE/FGCU GM 2 RECAP

Fort Myers, FL- FGCU (5-4, 0-2 ASUN) dropped their second ASUN Conference game in a row at home to Bellarmine University (5-5, 2-2 ASUN), 80-63, Saturday night from Alico Arena.

Stats:

FGCU shot 42.6% (23/54) from the field, 35.7% (10/28) from beyond the arc, and were outrebounded 32-30 by Bellarmine. The Eagles dished out 13 assists, had 7 steals, and 3 blocks in the game. FGCU forced 13 Bellarmine turnovers and had 17 team turnovers of their own.

Overview:

This was a game FGCU really needed to win. Bellarmine was super balanced when it came to scoring from beyond the arc, and hitting their free throws in the 1st half. It’s crazy to think that this team was a NCAA D-2 team last season. FGCU’s largest lead in the game was 8 pts. The Eagles just couldn’t keep up with the Knights in the 2nd half, only scoring 25 pts in the 2nd half.

FGCU had four players finish in double figures in scoring, including Jalen Warren (13 pts), Caleb Catto (12 pts), Cyrus Largie (12 pts), and Luis Rolon (11 pts). Rolon is turning into a true point guard and it was encouraging seeing him attack the basket last night. The freshman still makes some errant passes as part of his flashy game, but has been a true bright spot this season. Pairing him with Largie for years to come will be fun!

The turnovers seem to still be a huge problem for the Eagles, and that was a turning point in this game. Bellarmine had four players that finished in double figures, including Ethan Claycomb (17 pts), CJ Fleming (12 pts), Pedro Bradshaw (12 pts), and Juston Betz (12 pts).

Outstanding Players (BU):

Ethan Claycomb 17 pts, 6 asts, 5 reb

CJ Fleming 12 pts

Pedro Bradshaw 12 pts, 7 reb

Outstanding Players (FGCU):

Jalen Warren 13 pts

Caleb Catto 12 pts

Cyrus Largie 12 pts

What’s Next:

FGCU travels to Nashville to face Lipscomb University (9-7, 4-2 ASUN), for back to back games, beginning January 23rd from Allen Arena.
