FNU/FGCU RECAP

Fort Myers, FL- FGGU (2-1) beat FNU (2-10) 91-74, in a game that was highly contested, due to the Eagles not being able to put the Conquistadors away, until the end of the game.

Stats:

FGCU shot 47% (34/72) from the field, 24% (8/33) from beyond the arc. The Eagles outrebounded the Conquistadors 52-29. FGCU dished out 20 assists, had 2 blocks, and 10 steals in the game. FGCU forced 17 FNU turnovers, and had 21 team turnovers of their own.

FGCU was unable to put FNU away in this game. The Conquistadors lost to FAU 128-64 on 12/3, but were able to keep themselves in the game vs the Eagles. FGCU needs to have a killer instinct and be able to put away NAIA and D2 “cupcake” games like these. Stetson lost their home opener to Emmanuel University, a non D1 program since it was the same type of situation. In these games, you hope to see your whole bench emptied, and Coach Fly being able to try out plays, presses, etc. You don’t want to see FGCU struggle like this. ASUN Conference starts on January 1st and if the Eagles play like this, you can count out not hosting a home game and expect a bottom three finish.

Caleb Catto had a strong game finishing with 23 pts, and Jalen Warren scored 20 pts. Two Eagles finished with double doubles in the game: Cyrus Largie (13 pts, 11 reb) and Eli Abaev (10 pts, 10 reb). Largie’s 13 pts were a career high for him.

Outstanding Players (FNU):

Kenneth Santos 28 pts, 6 reb

Jeffrey Hernandez 21 pts, 5 reb

Outstanding Players (FGCU):

Caleb Catto 23 pts

Jalen Warren 20 pts

Cyrus Largie 13 pts, 11 reb

Eli Abaev 10 pts, 10 reb

What’s Next:

FGCU (2-1) heads on the road to face the University of Miami (2-0), Saturday afternoon at noon, from the Watsco Center.
