Newark, NJ- FGCU (9-20, 6-8) won their 6th ASUN game of the season vs NJIT (8-19, 5-9) Saturday from the Wellness and Event Center.
Overview:
FGCU picked up another huge ASUN road win and avenged a 56-54 loss at Alico Arena on 1/25 by splitting the ASUN regular season games vs the Highlanders this season.
While FGCU was led once again by Caleb Catto in points (13 points), and freshman Dakota Rivers who finished with a double double (10 points, 13 rebounds) in 23 minutes. The 13 rebounds were the most rebounds this season in a game for an FGCU player so he provided a huge boost for the Eagles in the game. The Eagles were able to hold NJIT to 25% shooting from the field (14/55) and 21% from beyond the arc (3/14). The Highlanders looked super flat in the game and the Eagles were able to go on some nice scoring runs to separate themselves from NJIT. FGCU held NJIT to 15 points in the 2nd half. Zach Cooks finished with 17 points, leading all scorers, but didn’t have the impact he had vs FGCU in January. The Eagles held the other starters in check with Brinson, Diakite, and Gibbs only combining to score 15 points. The huge home win NJIT had vs Stetson seemed to have affected the team since they looked exhausted but the Eagles took advantage and now have to win the final two games vs JU and UNA to finish 8-8 in ASUN play.
